Legal Resources:
The Attorney General of Texas Child Support Division is the agency in Texas devoted to creating child support obligations and enforcing child support obligations. On this website, a party to divorce or other order of child support can monitor child support payments, and can find phone numbers to request enforcement of those payments. Parties who need child support from the other parent of their child can also use this site to request services in setting up child support.
The Texas Advocacy Project is a non-profit organization that provides free legal services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking. This site also has a great links page with a large number of helpful links for victims of domestic violence.
The Travis County Domestic Relations Office provides a wide range of services to parents and children. On this website, a party to a divorce or family law matter can find resources for child support enforcement and child visitation enforcement, resources for supervision of visitation, gaurdian ad litem services, and information on child support payments including a child support payment calculator, and family law forms and information.
Texas Law Help is a website with information on how to obtain pro bono (free) or reduced cost legal services. Pro se litigants can also find a wide range of legal forms, including divorce and other family law peititions, answers, divorce and other family law orders, and other forms. Although these forms can be helpful if a litigant must go at it alone, it is the strong opinion of The Milner Law Firm that pro se representation is a recipe for disaster, and that any party to a litigation - contested or uncontested - should retain an attorney. Lawyers make a lot of money off of getting people out of the messes they create by representing themselves. In other words, representing yourself should be a LAST resort!
Volunteer Legal Services is an organization which finds volunteer attorneys for people who cannot afford legal representation in many areas of law including divorce, child custody, and other areas of family law. They also provide free legal clinics twice a week. If you are below poverty level and need a lawyer, this is the organization we would send you to every time.
